There’s a time and a face: The time course of composite face processing.

چکیده

Faces are considered a special class of holistically-processed object. The composite face task is widely-used tool to infer holistic processing. In this task, recognition 1 half shown be hampered by interference from the other face. Although effect has been documented numerous times, when used in different paradigms, faces do not always exhibit effects consistent with present study explored cause these discrepant findings combining signal-to-respond paradigm. amount time make decision was manipulated introducing response signal, and resulting changes accuracy were mapped over course processing, which then fit speed-accuracy trade-off model. We found that processing emerges late after approximately 400 ms for easy-to-discriminate 1000 difficult-to-discriminate faces. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved).

Holistic processing unites face parts across time

When complementary halves of different familiar faces are combined into a new face, there is interference in the identification of either half. This "composite face effect" has been taken as strong evidence that faces are processed holistically. Here, we demonstrate that this effect can persist when the two parts of a face are separated by up to 80 ms of visual noise, showing that the parts of ...

Hand movements reveal the time-course of shape and pigmentation processing in face categorization.

Although the roles of shape and pigmentation cues in face categorization have been studied in detail, the time-course of their processing has remained elusive. We measured participants' hand movements via the computer mouse en route to male or female responses (gender task) or young or old responses (age task) on the screen. Participants were presented with male and female faces (gender task) o...

Time course and robustness of ERP object and face differences.

Conflicting results have been reported about the earliest "true" ERP differences related to face processing, with the bulk of the literature focusing on the signal in the first 200 ms after stimulus onset. Part of the discrepancy might be explained by uncontrolled low-level differences between images used to assess the timing of face processing. In the present experiment, we used a set of faces...

A real-time face tracker

We present a real-time face tracker in this paper The system has achieved a rate of 30% frameshecond using an HP-9000 workstation with a framegrabber and a Canon VC-CI camera. It can track a person 'sface while the person moves freely (e.g., walks, jumps, sits down and stands up) in a room. Three types of models have been employed in developing the system. First, we present a stochastic model t...
